The mushroom cloud rose over the desert, a pillar of fire and death that dwarfed anything humanity had created before. Dr. Kael Thornton watched through darkened glass and felt a chill that had nothing to do with the desert night.

He had seen destruction before. In dreams, in memories that weren’t his own. But nothing like this.
